Decades have passed, yet memories of his visit remain deeply etched in the minds of generations of Co To residents. His words of advice continue to serve as a guiding light for the island’s people and military in protecting, building, and developing their homeland.
More than 60 years later, Tran Thi Trac, a resident of Zone 4 in Co To Town, still vividly remembers the first time she met President Ho Chi Minh during his visit on May 9, 1961. At that time, she was a militia member assigned to maintain security during the welcoming ceremony.
"The moment he stepped off the plane, the crowd rushed forward, cheering, ‘Long live President Ho Chi Minh!’ over and over. President Ho Chi Minh advised the islanders and soldiers to unite in building and developing the island," recalled Ms Trac.
The place where President Ho Chi Minh met with local officials and residents has since been transformed into the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Site. His memorabilia and words of guidance continue to hold a special place in the hearts of Co To’s military and civilians.
Once a poor and underdeveloped island district facing severe shortages, Co To now enjoys access to the national power grid, fresh water, and a well-developed passenger and cargo transport system. The district's economic growth has consistently remained above 15% per year.
Comprising over 70 islands and islets with a total land area of nearly 50 square kilometers and a population of approximately 7,000, Co To Island District has thrived thanks to the solidarity and determination of its Party Committee, government, and people. Their ongoing development efforts honor the special trust and affection that President Ho Chi Minh had for the soldiers and people of Co To./.
