New life in poor commune

The 35% poverty rate in Can Gio district in 1990 has gradually been reduced since the shift of production from low-effective rice and salt production to aquaculture which suits local soil and climate.

Over the past 5 years, more and more farmer families in the district have adopted aquaculture, raising the current shrimp production area to nearly 7,000 hectares and attracting some 1,900 families.

According to Chairman of the district People’s Committee Le Minh Dung, aquaculture is developing well and helping improve people’s living standard. Shrimp production, for example, brings profit of over VND250 million to each family per year on average. Long Hoa commune, one of the outstanding communes in aquaculture, has expanded production to 198 hectares with a productivity of nearly 1,200 tons per year.

Truong Van Banh, a large oyster producer, said that his family earns over VND500 million per year thanks to the expansion of oyster production to 12 hectares. Meanwhile, Huynh Van Manh’s aquaculture farm gets some VND2.6 billion per year from an area of 7,000 square meters.

The production has helped reduce the poverty rate in the commune to the lowest level compared to other communes in the district at 4.87%, and raise the income per capita to the highest at nearly VND60 million per person per year.

Effective orchid production

Over the past years, many poor families in Binh Chanh district’s Tan Kien commune have escaped poverty and become prosperous thanks to orchid production. The pioneer in the production, Mr. Kieu Cong Hau, spent several years studying effective orchid production from different parts of the country, before investing in precious orchid seedlings. So far, he has developed the orchid farm of over 6,000 square meters which brings VND30-40 million per month, or up to VND400-500 million during the lunar New Year festival.

Pham Thi Tuyet Hong, President of the Tan Kien communal Women’s Union, said that Mr. Hau’s orchid production had been expanded to over 20 families, to help them escape poverty and become richer.

“The commune is continuing to work with Mr. Hau to expand production and study other effective ornamental plant production, thus contributing to boosting local economic development,” said Ms Hong./.
