Six years ago, Duong Thi Lan, President of the Hang Bot ward Women’s Union, initiated a charitable soup pot to help patients at the Dong Da district General Hospital. “Our collective always remembers Uncle Ho’s teachings on practicing thrift and mutual assistance in difficult circumstances, thus collecting money and rice to carry out and maintain the soup pot project,” she said.
Since early 2020, the city Women’s Union has helped build and repair houses for 42 disadvantaged members.
“The union’s models have focused on caring for women, children and vulnerable people,” said Le Kim Anh, Chairwoman of the city Women’s Union. “The union has collected VND145 billion,” she added. “Over the past 5 years, 17,854 poor families and those living near the poverty line have been assisted to escape poverty, raise their living standard, besides the repairing of 679 charitable houses.”
Not only joining humanitarian activities, the union has led in protecting the environment. Every Sunday, women in Xuan La ward, Tay Ho district, gather to make hand baskets used to go to the market, to reduce the use of nylon bags. These models have been expanded in many other districts.
“By practicing Uncle Ho’s thrifty morality, and protecting the environment, over 400 members of the Xuan La ward Women’s Union used recycled baskets to bring food home from markets, thus avoiding the use of nylon bags,” said Tran Thi Thuy Ai, Chairwoman of the ward Women’s Union.
In Dich Vong ward, Cau Giay district, during the celebration of President Ho Chi Minh’s 130th birthday, the Women’s Union handed over 7 constructions on upgrading residential areas’ playgrounds. Meanwhile, the union in Ninh So commune, Thuong Tin district, built 327 dustbins at alleys and 2,300 ones at families, to encourage environmental protection.
In Gia Lam district, the union followed Uncle Ho’s example in living friendly with nature and protecting the environment by caring for 279 sections of roads and planting flowers at 94 sections of roads./.
